What are the benefits of rhinoplasty?

The nose is made up of skin, bone, and cartilage. Any of these components can be reshaped to improve the appearance of the nose. Women and men visit Dr. Ching for rhinoplasty to attain a variety of improvements, which often differ between Caucasian and Asian patients.

Caucasian Patients

Caucasian patients typically choose rhinoplasty for one or more of the following benefits:

  • Reducing the size of the nose
  • Reshaping the bridge or tip of the nose
  • Resizing the width of the nostrils

Asian Patients

Dr. Ching specializes in rhinoplasty for Asian patients who typically are interested in:

  • Elevating the bridge of the nose
  • Increasing the height of the tip
  • Changing the shape of the tip
  • Narrowing the base, or lower third of the nose

To provide an even more balanced profile, Dr. Ching may combine rhinoplasty with chin augmentation. Patients also may benefit from cheek implants to attain greater balance between the facial features.

Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Good candidates for rhinoplasty have realistic expectations about how changing the shape of the nose can help them look more attractive. This procedure is appropriate for adults as well as adolescents whose facial growth is complete.

Can the nose be reshaped without surgery?

In select patients who require only shaping of the bridge of the nose, Dr. Ching can use a dermal filler such as RADIESSE® to provide a non-surgical rhinoplasty. Results are impressive yet temporary.

How is rhinoplasty performed?

Dr. Ching performs rhinoplasty as an outpatient procedure in about 1 to 3 hours. The surgical techniques he uses vary greatly depending on the concerns of the patient, but they include one of the following approaches:

  • Closed rhinoplasty is performed with entirely internal nasal incisions. Scars are typically hidden within the nose.
  • Open rhinoplasty involves a small incision across a portion of the nose between the nostrils, called the columella. This area generally heals with an invisible scar. The advantage of this approach is greater control over reshaping of the cartilage of the tip of the nose.

During surgery, the bridge of the nose may be shaved down to remove any bumps or humps. If areas need to be built up, Dr. Ching may use cartilage from the nose or ear, as well as silicone implants.
