The Answer To Smooth Skin

Laser hair removal is a state-of-the-art procedure transforming the way we deal with unwanted hair. This minimally invasive technique employs concentrated light to target and impair hair follicles, delivering a more efficient and semi-permanent alternative to traditional hair removal methods. In this overview, we'll delve into the fundamentals of laser hair removal in Hawaii, including how it works, its benefits, and what to keep in mind for those considering this innovative approach.

Benefits of Laser Hair Removal

  • Long-Lasting Results: Provides a more permanent solution compared to shaving or waxing, with many experiencing significant hair reduction.
  • Precision: Targets dark, coarse hairs while leaving the surrounding skin undamaged.
  • Speed: Each pulse of the laser takes a fraction of a second and can treat many hairs simultaneously, making the procedure quick.
  • Reduced Ingrown Hairs: Minimizes the occurrence of ingrown hairs compared to other hair removal methods.
  • Improved Skin Texture: Can lead to smoother skin and even skin tone over time.
  • Convenience: Eliminates the need for regular shaving, waxing, or plucking, saving time and effort.

Who Is A Candidate For Laser Hair Removal?

The ideal candidate for laser hair removal typically possesses the following characteristics:

  • Skin and Hair Type: Candidates with fair to medium skin tones and darker hair experience the most effective results due to the contrast between hair and skin pigment.
  • Realistic Expectations: It's crucial to understand that laser hair removal provides significant hair reduction, but it may not be entirely permanent. Candidates should expect a reduction in hair growth rather than complete hair removal.
  • Commitment to Multiple Sessions: To achieve optimal results, candidates must commit to a series of laser hair removal sessions, usually spaced 4-6 weeks apart.
  • Adherence to Pre and Post-Treatment Care: Following specific care instructions before and after each session is vital to the procedure's success and to minimize potential side effects.
  • General Health: Candidates should be in good overall health, as certain medical conditions or medications may affect the safety and effectiveness of the treatment

How Laser Hair Removal Works:

Years of research and scientific studies discovered wavelengths that, when concentrated on hair, destroyed the hair follicle. Lasers were then developed to not only perform hair removal, but also do it through a safe, comfortable, nonsurgical procedure.

The wavelengths used by the laser in laser hair removal treatments are absorbed by the melanin, or pigment, in the hair itself. The precise targeting on those certain wavelengths eliminates the hair and leaves your skin unaffected.  Although heat is generated by the laser, cooling attachments counter it during the session. They also negate any heat that is produced within the hair shafts as they are treated.

Women and men visit Dr. Shim Ching for laser hair removal in Honolulu, Hawaii to get rid of excessive hair growth on the face and body. Previously the standard method for hair removal was electrolysis, which could only treat one hair at a time. One of the greatest breakthroughs of laser hair removal is that it can treat multiple hairs simultaneously.

This alone was a huge step forward as it greatly sped up the hair removal process. What used to take hundreds of hours can now be done in a fraction of the time and with greater effectiveness.

You may wonder, though, what precisely is the process that the laser uses on hair? A laser is merely a beam of light, its strength rooted in the narrow band of wavelengths it generates.

Treatments Needed

A single laser hair removal treatment can only target some of the desired hairs. The follicles that are dormant at that time are unaffected by the laser, so a later session is necessary. This allows time for additional follicles to become active and treatable.

The treatments are usually spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart for this reason. That schedule may be varied according to Dr. Ching’s decision on what will bring the best results for your hair removal. Some patients choose to maximize their time in the office with laser skin resurfacing or BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments.

Although you can see some results after the initial treatment, the real effects will usually be seen starting with the third session, once the majority of hairs in the targeted area have been fully treated.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines

  • Please avoid prolonged sun exposure, tanning beds, and tanning creams for approximately 48 hours prior to any laser treatment and refrain from using these products throughout the course of the remaining treatments.
  • Do not wax or use tweezers in the area for at least 4 weeks prior to your scheduled treatment.
  • Please shave the area to be treated prior to the day of the appointment (approximately 12 to 24 hours prior) to ensure a clean, hairless surface. Thick, overlaying hair, if not shaved, will absorb the laser energy and superficial burns can occur.
  • Please do not apply deodorant on the day of your appointment.
  • Please wait 2 weeks before/after injectable or filler procedures in the treatment area.
  • Patients with a history of herpes simplex in the treatment area should take preventative medication (such as Zovirax) prior to treatment.
  • There is a small risk or adverse reactions, such as changes in the texture and pigmentation of the skin, which are usually transient.
