Recovery anxiety is the number one reason people delay a facelift. They want the result but they’re afraid of the process. The best antidote to that fear is information. Here’s what facelift recovery actually looks like, week by week, based on a comprehensive deep plane procedure like The Ascend Lift™.
Day 1: The First 24 Hours
You’ll leave the surgical facility with a compression dressing around your face and neck. Expect to feel groggy from anesthesia. There will be some discomfort, but most patients describe it as tightness and pressure rather than sharp pain. Prescription medication manages any discomfort effectively. You’ll need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first night.
Days 2–7: The First Week
This is the most visually dramatic phase. Swelling and bruising are at their peak around days 2 through 4. Your face will look significantly swollen and discolored — this is normal and expected. The compression dressing is typically removed within a day or two, and you’ll see your surgeon for a follow-up within the first week.
Most patients spend this week resting at home with their head elevated. Ice packs help manage swelling. You’ll be able to eat soft foods, walk around the house, and handle basic self-care. Patients who undergo The Ascend Lift™ with SVF stem cell enrichment often report that their bruising resolves faster than expected — the regenerative cells appear to accelerate the early healing process.
Weeks 2–3: Turning the Corner
By the end of week two, the majority of visible bruising has faded or can be covered with makeup. Swelling is still present but has decreased significantly. Most patients feel comfortable going out in public with light makeup by day 10 to 14.
Sutures and staples are removed during this period. You may notice some numbness in the cheeks or around the ears — this is normal and resolves gradually over several weeks to months as nerve sensation returns.
Many patients return to desk work or non-strenuous activities by the end of week two.
Weeks 4–6: Looking Better Every Day
The dramatic improvement phase. Residual swelling continues to resolve, and your new facial contours become increasingly visible. Friends and family start making comments — typically “you look great” or “you look rested” rather than anything that suggests surgery.
You can resume most normal activities including light exercise. Strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, and activities that significantly raise blood pressure should wait until your surgeon clears you, typically around week 6.
Months 2–3: Settling In
Subtle swelling that only you and your surgeon can detect continues to resolve. The final result is beginning to emerge, though full settling takes longer. Incision scars are maturing and fading. Most patients report feeling fully “back to normal” during this period.
Months 4–6: The Final Result
By six months, your facelift result is essentially complete. The tissues have fully settled into their new position. Any residual swelling is gone. Scars have faded to thin, inconspicuous lines hidden in the natural creases around the ears and hairline.
For patients who received structural fat grafting as part of The Ascend Lift™, this is also when the regenerative benefits become most noticeable. Skin quality often looks visibly improved — smoother, firmer, more luminous — as the transferred stem cells continue supporting tissue repair.
Making Recovery Easier
The patients who have the smoothest recoveries are the ones who prepare. Stock your kitchen with soft foods before surgery. Arrange help for the first few days. Set up a comfortable recovery station with extra pillows to keep your head elevated. Cancel social obligations for two weeks. And follow your surgeon’s aftercare instructions precisely.
Recovery is temporary. The result is measured in decades.
