This page provides a condensed overview of key preparation and recovery guidelines for scar revision procedures. For complete details—including wound care and activity restrictions—please download the full Pre-Operative and Post-Operative instruction documents below.

What to Expect

Scar revision is typically performed under local anesthesia, which numbs the treatment area so you remain awake and comfortable. Sedation may be added in select cases. Recovery is generally quick, with most patients resuming normal activity within a few days.

Key Pre-Operative Guidelines (Summary)

Fasting: Not required for local anesthesia. If sedation is used, no food or drink for 3 hours prior.

Transportation: You may drive yourself home after local anesthesia. If sedatives are used, arrange for a ride.

Day of Surgery:

  • Shower or bathe with mild soap.
  • Do not apply lotions, deodorant, makeup, or skincare near the treatment area.
  • Remove jewelry or piercings near the surgical site.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to the treated area.

Key Post-Operative Guidelines (Summary)

Site Care: Keep the incision clean and dry. Wash gently with mild soap and water as directed. You may need to apply prescribed ointment.

Medications:

  • Tylenol (acetaminophen) is safe for pain.
  • Avoid NSAIDs (ibuprofen, Aleve, etc.) for the first week to reduce bleeding risk.

What to Expect:

  • Mild swelling, redness, or discomfort is normal and improves within 1–2 weeks.
  • Follow your surgeon’s wound care and dressing change instructions.

Recovery Expectations

Bruising/Swelling: Temporary and usually mild.

Pain: Typically minimal and manageable with over-the-counter medications.

Healing: Most incisions improve quickly, but final scar remodeling may take several months.

Emotional Recovery: Some patients feel anxious about the scar’s appearance early on—this is normal and improves as healing progresses.
