CoolSculpting® FAQ

The women and men who visit Dr. Shim Ching for CoolSculpting® in Honolulu, Hawaii, have many questions about this advanced procedure. On this page, he provides answers to the questions he is most frequently asked.

Q: What clinical evidence shows that the CoolSculpting procedure by ZELTIQ® really works?
A: ZELTIQ has focused on clinical studies involving hundreds of patients show that, for properly selected patients, the CoolSculpting procedure is an effective way to reduce fat without the pain, risk, and recovery time of more invasive surgical procedures. This results in noticeable, natural-looking fat reduction in the treated areas.

Q: How long until I notice results?
A: In properly selected patients, the CoolSculpting procedure results in a noticeable, measurable reduction in fat bulges in as little as three weeks with full results in two to four months.

Q: How do the results compare with invasive procedures like liposuction?
A: The results of the CoolSculpting procedure are not as rapid or dramatic as invasive procedures such as traditional liposuction. However, if you want to avoid the pain and recovery time associated with surgical procedures, the CoolSculpting procedure is the right fit for you.

Q: How long do the results last?
A: Patients experiencing fat layer reduction show consistent results at least six months after CoolSculpting. The elimination of fat cells as a result of the procedure is expected to last about as long as fat cells removed by invasive procedures such as liposuction or laser liposuction.

Q: What are common effects after the procedure?
A: The CoolSculpting procedure is entirely non-invasive, which allows your return to normal activities on the same day as the procedure, such as work or exercise. Redness may appear in the treated area, and may last from a few minutes to a few hours. Some localized bruising may occur, which typically clears within a few weeks. It’s not uncommon for patients to experience a temporary dulling of sensation in the treated area lasting one to eight weeks.

Q: How long does the procedure take?
A: Procedure time can be one hour or more depending on the size of the area to be treated. During your consultation, we will discuss approximately how long your procedure will take and how much time you should allow for your office visit.

Q: Does the CoolSculpting procedure hurt?
A: The CoolSculpting procedure is comfortable for a majority of patients. The company noted that no anesthesia was needed for any patients in clinical trials. Most patients are comfortable enough to read, work on their laptop, listen to music, or just relax and even nap during the procedure.

Q: Is there downtime after the Coolsculpting procedure?
A: There is no recovery time after your treatment. You may even resume your normal activities the same day as your procedure, including work and exercise.

Q: Will I benefit from additional Coolsculpting procedures?
A: A follow-up visit should be scheduled with our office two to four months after your procedure to assess your cosmetic improvement and consider additional Coolsculpting Procedures to achieve greater fat reduction.

Q: Am I a good candidate for CoolSculpting?
A: Ideal candidates for CoolSculpting are relatively fit, but have some modest-size fat bulges that are not easily reduced through diet and exercise. They are seeking spot reduction for specific areas of fat, but are not considering an invasive surgical procedure. Remember, the CoolSculpting procedure is not a way to lose weight or treat obesity, and it is not a substitute for invasive methods like liposuction. During a consultation, Dr. Ching and/or his staff can talk with you about whether you are a good candidate for the CoolSculpting procedure.

Q: How is the CoolSculpting procedure different from other procedures?
A: The controlled cooling of the CoolSculpting procedure targets and eliminates only fat cells without damage to other tissues or organs. Other treatment modalities such as lasers, radiofrequency, and focused ultrasound affect fat cells and may potentially affect other adjacent tissue in a way that is not comparable to the ZELTIQ method of Cryolipolysis™.
