What is a hair transplant?

Hair follicles that are more resistant to factors that cause hair loss are concentrated in the back and sides of the head. The hair follicles in these areas are thick enough to be used as donor follicles for the other areas of the scalp that have become bald, or where the hair is thinning.

During a hair transplant, Dr. Ching will harvest hairs from the donor area and transplant them to bald or balding areas of the head. He will create a hairline that follows your natural hairline with the donor hair follicles. Once in place, these follicles will grow strong, thick, healthy hair.

How does a hair transplant work?

Hair follicles are surgically transplanted during this outpatient procedure. To begin, your scalp will be cleaned and a local anesthetic will be applied. Next, the back of your scalp will be shaved.

Dr. Ching will carefully remove the hair follicles one by one from this area. The area where the follicles are being inserted is then cleaned and numbed. Dr. Ching will create holes or slits with a scalpel or needle in the scalp, then delicately place each graft in each hole into thinning and balding areas. Depending on the size of the area that’s being treated, your hair transplant will take between 4 and 8 hours.

This delicate procedure is performed with artistry to result in natural-looking hair restoration results that are virtually undetectable. Men and women can enjoy a renewed thickness, restored hairline, and a fuller head of hair.

What can I expect during recovery after hair transplant surgery?

After your transplant surgery, your scalp may be very tender for several days. Pain medication will resolve this. You may also have bandages over your scalp for a day or two. Dr. Ching may prescribe an antibiotic or an anti-inflammatory drug for you to take during your healing period, which should last for 2-5 days.

After 2-3 weeks, you will notice as the transplanted hair falls out. This is a natural part of the transplantation process. You will begin to see new growth within a few months after your transplant. It will take 6-9 months before the more significant hair regrowth appears.

When will I see my results?

The transplanted hair may fall out 2 to 3 weeks after your procedure; this should not be cause for concern because most of the transplanted follicles will still be viable. Because hair grows in cycles, the full results of the procedure will take about 6 months to see as the hair grows back in the transplanted follicles.
