An increasing number of women wanting to enhance the appearance of their vaginas are feeling more confident discussing their concerns with board-certified plastic surgeons. Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure offered at our Honolulu practice that is among a variety of vaginal rejuvenation treatments that can help improve both your comfort and confidence.

Who Can Benefit From Labiaplasty?

For various reasons, women can develop elongated or oversized labia minora (inner vaginal lips). This change to the labia can make women feel self-conscious during intimacy and lead to discomfort when wearing certain tight-fitting pants or bikinis. Pregnancy, age, genetics, or other issues can cause the labia minora to become enlarged. This can also be uncomfortable during physical activity such as riding a bicycle.

The women who consult with Dr. Shim Ching about labiaplasty typically:

  • Want to feel more confident about the appearance of their labia minora
  • Feel self-conscious when wearing swimsuits, yoga pants, or other tight-fitting clothes
  • Experience discomfort when riding a bike or horse, having sexual intercourse, or engaged in other activities

Labial reduction, also called labiaplasty, reduces the excess labial tissue that causes these concerns.

How Is Labiaplasty Performed?

Dr. Ching customizes the procedure to address the specific concerns and cosmetic goals of each patient. Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure usually performed under local anesthesia to ensure the patient remains comfortable throughout the surgery. Depending on the patient’s anatomy, Dr. Ching will use either the trim or wedge technique when performing labiaplasty.

For the trim technique, he makes an incision along the edge of the labia minora and then removes tissue extending outside the labia majora. With the wedge technique, Dr. Ching leaves the natural edge of the labia minora intact and instead removes a wedge-shaped section from the center of the inner labia. This incision is shorter than the trim technique incision. Both techniques may be combined with a clitoral hood reduction if this is needed. The ideal technique is tailored to the patient as all patients are unique in their anatomy and concerns.

Is There a Difference Between Labiaplasty and Vaginoplasty?

Even though some people believe labiaplasty and vaginoplasty are the same procedure, that’s not true. Labiaplasty, as described in the section on how the procedure is performed, alters the labia minora, labia majora, or other areas of the vulva.

Vaginoplasty, on the other hand, tightens the vaginal canal. Nonsurgical vaginal rejuvenation is becoming increasingly popular among our Hawaii patients. We offer ThermiVa®, an FDA-approved, no-downtime procedure that uses radiofrequency energy to tighten vaginal tissue.

Labiaplasty Alternatives

Labiaplasty reduces or reshapes the vagina’s inner lips (labia minora), but Dr. Ching also performs surgical procedures to address the appearance of the labia majora or outer lips. These include:

Labia Majora Reduction:

Some women become self-conscious about the appearance of their vaginas if the external labia have stretched and hang in an unattractive way. Dr. Ching can remove this excess tissue as part of a labia majora reduction without creating visible scars.

Labial Puff:

Injecting your own fat into the labia, called fat grafting, can restore a puffier, more youthful appearance to a vagina that has lost volume due to age or other factors. Using tiny incisions, Dr. Ching harvests a small amount of fat from another area of the body, such as the inner thighs or abdomen, and then grafts this fat into the labial region.

Labial and Mons Pubis Liposuction:

Excess fat can be concerning for some women and, using a micro liposuction technique, fat can be removed from the labia. It is also common to remove fat via liposuction from the mons pubis region. Both techniques use tiny incisions that heal with minimal to no scars.

Clitoral Hood Reduction:

Some women have excess skin or hooding on the top of the clitoris. This can lead to decreased sensation or a look that is not ideal. This skin, also known as the clitoral hood can be surgically trimmed without any visible scars, giving women a more balanced genital area.
