The nose is perhaps the single most aesthetically prominent structure on the face. Therefore, one of the most visibly transformative cosmetic procedures is rhinoplasty, often called a nose job. Honolulu, Hawaii plastic surgeon Dr. Shim Ching understands that a well-planned and well-executed improvement in nasal shape can have a dramatic impact on one’s appearance. Dr. Ching offers natural-looking results based on your cosmetic goals.

What Is Rhinoplasty?
In nose reduction surgery, the bridge, tip or width of the nostrils are reshaped into balanced proportions. Generally the nose can be thought of as skin, bone, and cartilage components. Any of these components can be reshaped to improve the appearance of the nose for the patient. In a traditional rhinoplasty, in Caucasian patients, the nose is typically being made smaller; the tip is reshaped with sutures so that it is more defined and infracture of the nose is performed to reduce the width of the nasal bones to make the nose smaller.
Rhinoplasty for Asian patients is usually done to elevate the bridge of the nose, or increase the height of the tip. Cartilage from the nose or ear, as well as silicone implants, are used when necessary. Scars are typically hidden within the nose. In selected patients who require only shaping of the bridge of the nose, injection of RADIESSE® can provide a non-surgical rhinoplasty. Whatever the method used, the result is a new you.
Your Rhinoplasty Procedure
There are many ways to reshape the nose, and the surgical techniques that are involved in reshaping the nose with a rhinoplasty vary greatly depending on the concerns of the patient. Rhinoplasty can be performed with entirely internal nasal incisions, which is called a closed rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty can also be performed as an open rhinoplasty, where there is a small cut across a portion of the nose betwen the nostrils, called the columella. This area generally heals with an invisible scar. The advantage of this approach is greater control over reshaping of the cartilage of the tip of the nose.
The bridge of the nose can also be shaved down to remove any bumps or humps. A good candidate for a rhinoplasty is any patient who has realistic expectations about changing the shape of their nose to result in a more attractive appearance.
Rhinoplasty can take anywhere between 1 and 3 hours to perform. Recovery from rhinoplasty usually takes 1 to 2 weeks.
