What are the benefits of eyelid surgery?

Women and men choose eyelid surgery for a variety of reasons, which often include one or more of the following:

Removing loose upper eyelid skin
Reducing puffy bags from under the eyes
Raising droopy lower eyelids
Creating or enhancing the upper eyelid fold (Asian eyelid surgery)

Dr. Ching can combine eyelid surgery with other facial procedures such as a brow lift to further enhance the upper face or a facelift for an overall facial rejuvenation.

The Asian Double Eyelid Surgery Approach

Asian women and men are typically interested in eyelid surgery for different reasons than those who choose traditional eyelid surgery. Double eyelid surgery helps adults of all ages retain their Asian appearance while gaining one or more of the following changes:

Making the eyes appear bigger by opening the upper eye area
Creating or enhancing the upper eyelid fold
Raising and defining the eyelid crease
Enhances the results of eye makeup

Dr. Ching can combine double eyelid surgery with other facial procedures such as Asian eye lengthening to extend the inner corners of the eyes (medial epicanthoplasty) or Asian rhinoplasty to further enhance the face.

How Asian Eyelid Surgery Is Performed

Dr. Ching performs double eyelid surgery as an outpatient procedure by personalizing one of the following techniques:

Incisional double eyelid surgery involves the creation of the eyelid fold using an incision and sutures. This method can provide a deeper and stronger crease, but it requires a longer recovery time. Some revision eyelid surgery needs to be performed in this manner.

Suture method double eyelid surgery, also called non-incisional double eyelid surgery, involves only tiny incisions and special suturing to create the fold. The same suture may be used to address ptosis, drooping of the eyelid.

Some patients have a heaviness of the upper eyelids caused by fat deposits, which require removal during surgery. Older patients may require upper eyelid skin removal or a brow lift to optimize their results. Because each patient is unique, Dr. Ching will select the most appropriate method for you during your consultation.

How Traditional Eyelid Surgery Is Performed

Dr. Ching performs eyelid surgery as an outpatient procedure. The surgery takes from 30 minutes to 2 hours to perform. Depending on the patient’s needs, he performs upper eyelid surgery, lower eyelid surgery, or both.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

For lower eyelid surgery, the procedure depends on the patient’s condition. Some patients only need fat removed. In many cases this fat is preserved, but moved into a lower position in the lower eyelid to fill out any hollows that cause puffy bags or darkened circles under the eyes. Other patients may need excess skin removed and the muscle and ligaments of the lower eyelid tightened. Incisions are hidden either inside the lower eyelid or just below the lashes. With either placement, the scar is concealed.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

For upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Ching places the incision in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. If the patient does not have an upper eyelid crease, he places the incision where the resulting scar is almost invisible. He then removes loose skin and fat from the upper eyelid along with a small strip of muscle.
