Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your results may vary.

Why am I losing my hair?

Before performing hair transplant surgery, Dr. Ching will rule out a possible medical cause of your hair loss. For most men, hair loss is due to androgenic alopecia, a genetic condition commonly called male pattern baldness. Like eye color, this trait is the result of genes from both parents, not only your mother’s side. Androgenic alopecia makes the hair follicles on the top and sides of the head sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), causing the follicles to shrink and eventually stop producing hair. Although hair loss may not begin until middle age or later, these follicles are actually predisposed to begin shrinking when you reached adulthood. Unfortunately, once this process starts, it will continue throughout your lifetime.

How is hair restoration performed?

The medical process for hair replacement involves the transplantation of hair follicles from one area of the head to another. Hair follicles are found in good supply in virtually all men, even men with advanced baldness. These “lifelong hairs” are concentrated in areas at the back and sides of the head. One of the most popular devices used for hair restoration is the ARTAS®, which uses the follicular unit extraction (FUE) technique.

During the hair transplant procedure, we take excess hairs — follicles and all — from this plentiful area and relocate them to areas of thinning and balding on the top or front of the head. Grafts are placed one at a time in the thinning and balding areas. This procedure is done in a manner that results in natural-looking hairlines and density of hair.

Dr. Ching performs hair restoration within the comfort and safety of our Honolulu, Hawaii, office. Depending on the number of grafts required, the procedure may take between 2 and 6 hours.

What can I expect during recovery after hair transplant surgery?

Most of our hair transplant patients experience only mild discomfort that is often treated with over-the-counter pain medicine such as acetaminophen. You will likely be ready to return to work within 1 to 3 days. Strenuous activity should be avoided for a few days. Dr. Ching will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions before your procedure.

When will I see my results?

The transplanted hair may fall out 2 to 3 weeks after your procedure; this should not be cause for concern because most of the transplanted follicles will still be viable. Because hair grows in cycles, the full results of the procedure will take about 6 months to see as the hair grows back in the transplanted follicles.
