The Science Behind Coolsculpting™

The Coolsculpting™ Procedure was discovered by dermatologists at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. Coolsculpting™ utilizes the non-invasive cooling of fat cells to induce lipolysis (breaking down of fat cells) without damage to the skin. The result is a noticeable, natural-looking reduction in fat. A non-invasive applicator is attached to the targeted procedure area to cool the underlying fat tissue, while protecting the skin. The cooled fat cells undergo apoptosis (controlled disappearance of to cells) and are gradually eliminated, reducing the thickness of the treated fat layer. Inflammatory cells gradually digest the affected fat cells in time after the procedure. Lipids from the fat cells are slowly released and transported by the lymphatic system soon to be processed, much like fat from food.

What to Expect During and After your Procedure

Once we have determined you are a candidate and the desired areas of treatment are selected, an applicator will be positioned on your body. The device will then draw up the skin between two cooling panels. The sensation is merely a firm pull and pressure- enough of a pull to ensure adequate exposure to the tissue. During the procedure, you'll feel a cold sensation which soon dissipates. A single treatment area takes approximately one hour.

Immediately after your Zeltiq procedure, the treated tissue may look or feel stiff. This is completely normal and will disappear within approximately 10 minutes. The treated area will then be red for roughly 20 minutes after the applicator is removed. The gentle vacuum pressure can cause bruising and tenderness to the touch and if this occurs, it typically resolves within a few weeks. A temporary mild redness may occur in the treated area lasting for a few minutes to a few hours. The redness can vary in each patient and more severe or persistent redness will gradually improve after a few days. You may also feel a temporary lack of sensation in the treated area for up to eight weeks after treatment.

In the following weeks after your Zeltiq procedure, a gradual reduction in the thickness of fat layer will begin to take place. On average, each CoolSculpting™ procedure results in a 20-25% reduction of fat in the treated area. This results in a noticeable, measurable fat reduction in as little as three weeks with full results in two to four months.
